Arsenal have struck a £12 million deal to sign midfielder Jorginho from Chelsea on January transfer deadline day, football.london reports.
The Gunners will be paying an initial sum of £10 million plus an additional £2 million in add-ons. Mikel Arteta’s squad have taken on a 31-year-old Italian international who can offer needed backup in their midfield.
With Mohamed Elneny unavailable and Thomas Partey’s injury scare after being subbed off during the FA Cup match against Manchester City, Arsenal had to make a move now.
However, their bid for Moises Caicedo at Brighton was rejected, which meant they needed to scramble up alternative options with few hours left in the window.
But this may turn out to be beneficial as Jorginho comes with experience of winning trophies and could give them an edge in their title race.
When his transfer goes through, he will only get five choices for his shirt number as he has only worn numbers 5, 8 and 19 throughout his club career: 2, 13, 20, 22, 26, 28, 29 and 30*.
