The Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to provide clarity about the deposit of old naira notes.
This comes after reports that commercial banks have begun collecting N500 and N1,000 notes from customers, despite the CBN’s rebuttal.
Olusoji Oluwole, president, ASSBIFI said that clarification is needed to avoid potential problems.
He also expressed concern about whether banks will be allowed to receive such deposits for the next 60 days.
In addition, he urged the CBN to make a public announcement regarding their stance on these deposits via their website or other channels.
Besides this issue, Oluwole noted that several meetings had been held to address recent bank branch attacks in various states and ensure adequate security was provided in all operational areas with immediate effect.
He added that while members would resume at functional branches, they were advised to assess the security situation before opening for business, or shut down and relocate if necessary.
