The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the Federal Government that it may embark on another nationwide strike if urgent steps are not taken to fulfill long-standing obligations, including full implementation of the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, ASUU President Dr. Chris Piwuna outlined the union’s frustrations with the government’s failure to address key issues that have lingered for over a decade. According to reports, these include withheld salaries, delayed renegotiation of agreements, and continued use of the controversial IPPIS payment platform.

“These issues are not new,” said Piwuna. “They speak to the government’s persistent neglect and lack of commitment to the education sector.”

Piwuna detailed nine major concerns the union wants resolved, starting with the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, which has been stalled since 2017. He also referenced the non-payment of salaries owed from the 2022 strike and alleged mismanagement within the IPPIS framework, which university staff have long criticized.

ASUU further condemned the government’s unfulfilled promise to inject ₦150 billion into revitalizing the university system and the non-payment of earned academic allowances. The union said these delays are eroding morale and trust in the administration.

Additional complaints were raised about the marginalisation of union members in certain institutions, including Kogi State University and Lagos State University.

The union’s message was clear: unless tangible actions are taken soon, academic activities across public universities may again be suspended, affecting students, staff, and institutions nationwide.
