Nigerian Universities will continue to be closed after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) decided to continue its six month old strike on Monday.

The decision to extend the strike was taken after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the union’s headquarters at the University of Abuja on Monday morning, August 29, 2022.

The six month old strike had started since February 14 and some weeks ago, it was extended by four weeks which expires today.

The union is demanding for the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

And after a meeting with the union two weeks ago, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu revealed that every demand of the union has been met, except that its members won’t receive arrears of the strike period.

Meanwhile, the union has also insisted on not calling off the lingering strike until the arrears are settled.
