Buhari’s aide, Bashir Ahmad, has reacted to the recent detention of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, in the United Kingdom.
Peter Obi was detained and interrogated for hours by immigration officials at Heathrow Airport in London on April 7, 2023.
The Head of Obi-Datti Media Office, Diran Onifade, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
The Obi-Datti media office said the former Governor of Anambra State was wrongly detained over alleged duplication offences allegedly committed by an impostor who is still at large.
The statement added that the impostor of Obi may have committed various crimes that led to the harassment of the LP flagbearer who lived for over a decade in the UK.
In response to the situation, Bashir Ahmad mocked the situation and questioned whether it was the real Peter Obi or a fake one that contested for the February 25th election.
He also called the detention “unacceptable” and pleaded with the UK government to explain the circumstances surrounding Obi’s arrest and the numerous imposters.
The situation has raised questions about the UK’s immigration policies and procedures.
While it is important for countries to ensure that their borders are secure and that individuals do not enter illegally, it is also essential to ensure that innocent individuals are not wrongfully detained and interrogated.
The Obi-Datti media office has called on the UK government to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure that justice is served.
It is unclear what actions the UK government will take, but the incident highlights the need for effective immigration policies that balance security with fairness and justice.
As for Peter Obi, he has been released from detention and is reportedly back in Nigeria.
However, the incident has caused him undue stress and embarrassment, and he is likely to seek legal action against those responsible for his wrongful detention.
