Chelsea surged into second place in the Premier League with a 5-1 thrashing of 10-man Southampton at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.

The Blues now have 28 points from 14 matches, seven behind league leaders Liverpool.

Southampton, on the other hand, remain bottom of the table with just five points, seven adrift of 17th-placed Crystal Palace.

The match got off to a lively start, with three goals in the opening 17 minutes.

Chelsea took the lead through Axel Disasi’s header from an Enzo Fernandez corner.

Southampton equalized soon after, as Joe Aribo converted a cross from Kyle Walker-Peters.

However, Chelsea regained the lead six minutes later when Christopher Nkunku capitalized on a costly mistake by Southampton goalkeeper Joe Lumley, who misplayed a pass outside his box, allowing Nkunku to score.

Chelsea extended their lead in the 34th minute, with Noni Madueke scoring after a brilliant assist from Joao Felix.

The situation worsened for Southampton before halftime, as Jack Stephens received a straight red card for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair inside the penalty box following a VAR review.

The second half saw Chelsea dominate further, adding two more goals.

Cole Palmer scored in the 77th minute, and Jadon Sancho completed the 5-1 rout late on.

The victory highlighted Chelsea’s current form and their capability to compete for the title.
