Chelsea, one of the premier league giants, has set its sights on Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez as a potential alternative should their pursuit of long-time target Victor Osimhen fall through. Osimhen, who has been on Chelsea’s radar since last summer, recently signed a contract extension with Napoli until 2026, dealing a blow to Chelsea’s hopes of securing the Nigerian international.
Despite this setback, Chelsea has not given up on their pursuit of Osimhen, with reports suggesting that the 25-year-old may not stay in Naples beyond the summer of 2024. Osimhen’s impressive performances have attracted interest from several top clubs, including Manchester United, Paris Saint Germain, Real Madrid, and Liverpool.
However, if Chelsea fails to secure Osimhen’s signature, they have identified Martinez as a backup option. The Argentine striker, who has two years remaining on his contract with Milan, would come at a lower price compared to Osimhen.
Last season, Osimhen scored 26 goals in 32 Serie A appearances, playing a crucial role in Napoli’s title-winning campaign. However, this season, he has managed only 11 goals and three assists in 17 league appearances.
