Why the Todd Boehly clause could trigger a Chelsea player exodus

Chelsea could be set for 13-player mass exodus due to Todd Boehly clause

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has reportedly added a clause to the contracts of players signed in the last two transfer windows stating that they would have to defer 25 percent of their wages if the team does not qualify for next season’s Champions League.

While this does not apply to those signed before Boehley’s takeover, it could lead to a mass exodus of up to 13 players at the end of the season if the Blues fail to ensure their place in Europe’s premier club competition.

In addition, this clause is meant to protect Chelsea from suffering any financial trouble due to their lack of Champions League participation.

With only 11 points separating them from qualifying for a third European Cup title, playing in the tournament remains their best hope of ensuring continued participation in Europe’s top tier competition next season.
