China Rejects U.S. Request for Defense Chief Meeting Amid Rising Tensions

Tensions between China and the United States continue to escalate as China rejects a request for a meeting between the two countries’ defense chiefs.

The Pentagon had asked for the meeting to take place on the sidelines of an annual security forum in Singapore, but China declined, apparently due to Washington’s recent sanctions against the Chinese defense minister.

“Overnight, the PRC (the People’s Republic of China) informed the US that they have declined our early May invitation for [Defense] Secretary [Lloyd] Austin to meet with PRC Minister of National Defense Li Shangfu in Singapore this week,” the Pentagon said in a statement to the Journal.

The US military has expressed frustration over being repeatedly snubbed by Chinese officials in its efforts to make official contact possible.

Beijing has vowed to halt dialogue with Washington over recent sanctions on its top defense official and declared that it sees no reason to keep talking with the US as long as it pursues a disingenuous policy.
