On Friday night, an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Benue State was attacked by armed men resulting in the death of 34 people and leaving over 40 others injured.

The camp is located at LGEA Primary School Mgban in Nyiev Council Ward of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to Jonah, a resident who spoke with Daily Trust, the attack occurred at around 9 pm on Friday.

Jonah disclosed that a pregnant woman and her son were among those killed while many people sustained injuries.

Christopher Waku, the Security Adviser of the Guma local government council, confirmed the attack, stating that he was at the scene of the incident.

He also revealed that the people killed were displaced from their various ancestral homes and were taking refuge at a classroom in LGEA Mgban.

Waku added that 24 corpses were recovered inside the classroom while the remaining 10 bodies were picked up along the road in the community.

He described the attack as “genocide.”

The attack has been attributed to armed men suspected to be herders, who have been involved in clashes with farmers and communities in the region.

This incident is the latest in a series of attacks on farming communities in the state.

The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has condemned the attack and called on the federal government to take urgent action to end the killings and ensure the safety of the people. He also urged the security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
