Violent clashes erupted in Sudan on Saturday between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leaving at least 56 civilians dead and 595 people injured, according to the Sudanese Doctors’ Union.
The RSF, a paramilitary group with an estimated 100,000 members, claimed to have seized several key locations, including the presidential palace, army chief’s residence, state television station, and airports in various cities.
However, the army denied these claims and said it had destroyed two RSF bases in Khartoum.
The violence comes amid tensions between military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, over the integration of the RSF into the regular army.
The integration was a key element of talks to return the country to civilian rule after the 2021 military coup.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, and the Arab League is scheduled to hold an urgent meeting on Sunday to discuss the situation.
