Several Nigerian banks have resumed allowing international payments on naira-denominated debit cards, a move driven by improved foreign exchange liquidity, NaijNaira can report.
This update follows months of restrictions, with only Providus Bank previously offering the service to select premium customers, according to report by ThisDayLive.
GTBank informed customers that its Naira debit card now comes with a $1,000 quarterly international spending limit.
“This limit includes up to $500 for ATM withdrawals abroad and up to $1,000 for online and POS transactions,” GTBank stated.
The bank emphasized that the cap applies to all foreign transactions, including online purchases and in-store card payments made outside Nigeria.
UBA also reinstated international access on its Premium Naira Cards, which includes the Gold, Platinum, and World variants.
“In line with our continued commitment to providing you with seamless and enhanced banking experiences…your Premium Naira Card [is] now enabled for international transactions,” UBA said.
Customers with these cards can now pay for streaming services, online shopping, and foreign subscriptions more easily.
Wema Bank also joined the list, confirming to customers that their naira Mastercard can now be used globally.
“Your Wema Naira Mastercard just went global! Now you can pay in dollars on all your favourite international platforms—Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, Netflix, Spotify, YouTube,” Wema Bank said.
Stanbic IBTC and other commercial banks are also expected to follow suit as the FX landscape improves, giving cardholders wider flexibility.
