Ronald Koeman, former Everton boss, has provided his insight as to why Cody Gakpo has had such a slow start to life at Liverpool, suggesting that the team’s horrendous current form is largely to blame.
The 23-year-old forward joined the Reds from PSV in January, with his electric form in his home country followed by a barren spell not quite managing to continue after his switch.
In an interview with Andy van der Meijde YouTube channel, the Dutch manager noted that due to Gakpo’s youth and Liverpool’s lack of successful post-World Cup matches, it could be tough for him to adapt quickly.
Similarly, Gakpo himself stated that coming into a team that was fighting for form instead of top spot posed a further challenge for him and required resilience in order to toe the line of expectations from Klopp and show his best side.
With the Merseyside derby coming up on Monday night against Koeman’s former club Everton at Anfield, Gakpo will be determined to end his scoreless streak then.
