The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially announced the appointment of former ace winger Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

This decision comes after the recommendation of the NFF’s technical and development committee. Finidi George, who previously served as an assistant to José Peseiro for 20 months, took on the interim role following Peseiro’s departure after the Super Eagles’ runner-up position at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

During his interim tenure, he led the team in two friendly matches in Morocco. In the first match, the Super Eagles secured a historic 2-1 victory over Ghana, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars.

However, they faced a setback in the second game, losing 0-2 to Mali. Finidi George is a former player who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia and impressed at the FIFA World Cup finals in the USA the same year. He earned 62 caps for Nigeria and participated in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals.

He also won gold, silver, and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000, and 2002 AFCON tournaments. His immediate task as the head coach will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

These matches are must-win encounters as the Super Eagles currently trail behind Rwanda and South Africa in Group C of the African campaign.
