Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove has had a defibrillator implanted following his cardiac arrest on December 1 during a Serie A match against Inter Milan.
Reports from Sky Sport and Gazzetta Dello Sport confirmed that the operation took place on Tuesday morning at Careggi hospital in Florence, where Bove has been recovering since collapsing on the pitch.
The match was suspended, and Bove was rushed to the intensive care unit.
Early medical tests ruled out serious damage to his central nervous and cardio-respiratory systems.
Bove has been awake and undergoing tests for over a week and is expected to be discharged soon after the procedure.
However, if confirmed, the implantation of a defibrillator could jeopardize his football career in Italy due to strict health regulations that govern athletes in the country.
This incident mirrors the case of Christian Eriksen, who suffered a similar collapse while playing for Denmark during the 2021 European Championship.
After receiving an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), Eriksen was initially banned from playing for Inter Milan in Italy due to the country’s health rules.
However, he now plays for Manchester United and continues to represent Denmark.
