Borussia Dortmund have appointed Niko Kovac as their new manager, following the dismissal of Nuri Sahin due to a poor start to the season.
Despite leading Dortmund to the Champions League final earlier in the year, Sahin’s side struggled with three consecutive league defeats, leaving the club in the bottom half of the Bundesliga.
Youth coach Mike Tullberg temporarily took charge for recent matches, including a draw with Werder Bremen and a win over Shakhtar Donetsk.
Kovac, who previously managed Bayern Munich, replaces Sahin after a search that reportedly included talks with Erik ten Hag.
However, Ten Hag’s decision to wait until summer to return to management left him out of the running.
Kovac has signed a contract that will keep him at Signal Iduna Park until June 2026
His managerial career includes successful stints with the Croatian national team and Eintracht Frankfurt, and he led Bayern Munich to a league and cup double in his first season before being dismissed early in his second.
He also managed Monaco in Ligue 1 and Wolfsburg, although he was sacked by the latter in March 2024.
Dortmund are currently 11th in the Bundesliga, five points off the European places, despite qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages.
Kovac will look to turn around their fortunes and lift the club back into contention for top-tier European football.
