The University of Lagos has recently announced a significant increase in tuition fees for its undergraduate students.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, revealed that the tuition fees will now range from N100,750 to N190,250, depending on the course of study and whether laboratory or studio work is required.
This increase in fees comes amidst rising inflation and petrol prices in the country following the removal of fuel subsidy.
The decision to increase tuition fees was met with concern from the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, who requested a rebate for staff members with children in the university.
However, the Vice Chancellor explained that the charges were set nationally and could not be modified for specific student categories.
She did offer the option of paying in installments for staff wards, with the condition of paying up one month before the final exams.
It is worth noting that in June 2023, President Bola Tinubu signed the Student Loan Bill into law, allowing Nigerian students to access loans from the government.
