Geoffrey Hinton, 'Godfather of AI,' resigns from Google, raises concerns about AI risks

Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI,” has resigned from his position as an engineering fellow at Google due to concerns about the risks of AI.

Hinton helped lay the groundwork for today’s generative AI, but now worries about the danger it poses, particularly in regards to misinformation and the potential for AI to automate entire job markets.

Hinton’s concerns were heightened after the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, which demonstrated the rapid progress of AI.

Hinton clarified on Twitter that he is not criticizing Google specifically, but rather the broader risks of unregulated and rapid AI development.

He believes that companies should not scale up AI until they have a better understanding of how to control it. Hinton’s resignation is another call for caution in the development of AI.
