Governor Hope Uzodinma has been declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Imo State governorship election.
The ruling party conducted its primary election at the Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri, the state capital, on Thursday, ahead of the November 11 governorship election.
After the poll, the chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee, Rear Admiral William Kayoda (retd), declared Uzodinma as the party’s standard flagbearer for the November poll.
According to Kayoda, Uzodimma polled 63,618 votes after the party adopted the direct primary mode of election.
The primary election was contested by 9 aspirants, including the Deputy Governor of the state, Prof. Placid Njoku, and former Governor Rochas Okorocha’s son-in-law, Uche Nwosu.
Governor Uzodinma, in his acceptance speech, thanked the party leaders and members for their support and promised to redouble his efforts in tackling insecurity and delivering good governance to the people of the state if re-elected.
“I am humbled by the massive support I received from party members and leaders, and I want to assure them that I will not take their trust for granted. I will redouble my efforts in tackling insecurity and delivering good governance to the people of Imo state,” Uzodinma said.
The governor also urged other aspirants who contested in the primary to support his candidacy, saying that the party must unite to win the November governorship election.
“I want to appeal to my co-aspirants to join hands with me in this task of taking Imo state to greater heights. I am calling on all members of our great party to unite and work together to ensure victory at the polls,” Uzodinma added.
The Imo state governorship election is expected to be keenly contested, as both the APC and the PDP are expected to deploy their political machinery to ensure victory at the polls.
