Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has chosen Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as his deputy, following the impeachment of the former deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, by the Edo State House of Assembly.

Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, who hails from Akoko-Edo in the Edo North Senatorial District, will be sworn in by the governor at the Dennis Osadebey Government House on Monday.

Impeachment of Philip Shaibu

Philip Shaibu was impeached by the state assembly after a seven-man panel, led by retired Justice S. A. Omonuwa, investigated allegations of misconduct against him. The panel held its inaugural sitting in Benin, the state capital, and concluded its proceedings on Friday, with Shaibu failing to appear to defend the allegations against him.

The Edo State House of Assembly, as the petitioner in the case, had presented its case and allowed Shaibu the opportunity to defend himself.

However, Shaibu’s counsel, Oladoyin Awoyale, left the hearing after the panel denied his request to suspend the proceedings pending the outcome of a suit filed in Abuja challenging the impeachment.

The impeachment of Philip Shaibu paves the way for Governor Obaseki to appoint a new deputy governor in the person of Omobayo Marvellous Godwins.
