Pep Guardiola has extended his contract with Manchester City, keeping him at the club until 2027.
The 53-year-old manager’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the current season.
This agreement will see Guardiola celebrate a decade at the Etihad Stadium, having joined the club from Bayern Munich in 2016.
“Since the beginning of the season, I’ve been thinking a lot,” Guardiola said. “I want to be honest, I thought this [season] should be the last one. But the problems we had in the last month, I felt now was not the right time to leave. I didn’t want to let the club down.
“Manchester City means so much to me,” Guardiola said. “We have experienced so many amazing times together. I have a really special feeling for this football club. That is why I am so happy to be staying for another two more seasons.”
Guardiola’s decision to remain is a significant boost for Manchester City, particularly after the departure of director of football Txiki Begiristain, who played a key role in the club’s success.
Begiristain will be replaced by Hugo Viana from Sporting Lisbon.
City’s chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, praised Guardiola’s ongoing dedication, which has shaped both the club and English football.
Guardiola’s new contract does not include a break clause, despite the ongoing legal challenges City faces regarding alleged financial breaches.
