Ilkay Gundogan has agreed to a return to Manchester City after a year at Barcelona.

This comes after Manchester City were previously interested in Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo.

However, Olmo opted to move to FC Barcelona instead.

Gundogan had two options for his next move as he was set to leave Barcelona on a free transfer.

He had the choice between joining Turkish club Fenerbahce or returning to Manchester City, where he previously played under Pep Guardiola.

The allure of reuniting with Guardiola proved irresistible, leading Gundogan to choose a return to City.

Sources confirmed that City and Gundogan have agreed on the terms of his comeback.

Gundogan, who played 304 matches for City, scoring 60 goals and providing 38 assists, was a crucial figure in their treble-winning 2022/23 season.

Guardiola personally spoke with Gundogan over the weekend, encouraging the midfielder to return to the Etihad.

After these discussions, the City hierarchy quickly moved to finalize the deal.

Gundogan has agreed to a one-year contract with City, which includes an option for an additional year.

Barcelona is eager to complete the deal before the weekend so they can remove Gundogan from their wage bill, which would enable them to register new signing Dani Olmo, among other financial adjustments.
