A harmonised new minimum national wage is expected to be ready on or before President Bola Tinubu’s first anniversary on May 29. According to a source in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), the new wage will be designed to meet the nation’s current economic reality.
The representatives of the government on the Bukar Goni Aji-led tripartite committee met recently to discuss the proposals presented by the organized labor on the issue. While specific details from the meeting were not disclosed, the source revealed that the focus is on ensuring a reasonable and realistic minimum wage. ‘
To achieve this, the committee plans to hold another meeting in the coming days. The aim is to finalize the discussions and reach an agreement on the new minimum wage before or on May 29. The committee members understand the importance of providing Nigerian workers with a wage that reflects the current economic situation.
Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated the tripartite committee on January 30 at the State House in Abuja. The committee consists of representatives from the federal and state governments, organized labor, and the private sector.
