Jordan Henderson has been stripped of the Ajax captain’s armband following his request to leave the club and join Monaco.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who is currently the highest-paid player in the Netherlands with a £90,000 weekly wage, was not made captain for Ajax’s Europa League match against Galatasaray, despite being available for selection.

Instead, goalkeeper Remko Pasveer was given the armband.

Henderson played 75 minutes before being substituted due to cramp.

He has become unsettled at Ajax after expressing his desire to transfer.

The 34-year-old requested to be released from his contract, which runs until 2026, in order to pursue Champions League football with Monaco.

Ajax officials were reportedly taken aback by his openness about wanting to move for the chance to compete in the Champions League with Monaco, especially after rescuing him from Al-Ettifaq following an unsuccessful spell in the Saudi Pro League.

This season has seen Henderson make significant contributions, including 43 appearances and 8 assists, marking him as a key player for Ajax.

However, with the club prepared to review his request at the end of the season, the window for a potential move to Monaco may close quickly.

Ex-Dutch star Wesley Sneijder expressed concern, suggesting this could be Henderson’s final match for Ajax.
