Arsenal legend and Como shareholder Thierry Henry expressed his delight at the club’s promotion to Serie A but insisted that the credit should go to the players.
Henry was present at the Stadio Sinigaglia to witness Como’s final match of the regular season, which ended in a 1-1 draw against Cosenza, securing their promotion.
Como had a two-point lead over third-placed Venezia before the game, and Venezia’s loss to Spezia contributed to Como’s promotion.
When asked about his thoughts on the achievement, Henry humbly redirected the praise to the players, stating, “I didn’t play, so all the merit goes to the players. You need to go and ask them the question.”
Henry admitted that, like everyone else in the stadium, he was more focused on the result of the Venezia match rather than the game itself.
He emphasized that he was there to support the club and acknowledged the hard work of the players and the people involved in the club’s success.
As an ex-Juventus striker, Henry was asked if he would speak in Italian in the future. He replied, “I understand it; my Italian will come back, don’t worry.”
Henry was accompanied in the stands by Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, who also earned promotion to the top division in England this season.
Como captain Alessandro Bellemo expressed his emotions after the match, stating that lifting the cup was an indescribable feeling.
Como, who went bankrupt in 2016 and were reborn as a new club in Serie D, have now joined Parma in Serie A.
The third team promoted to Italy’s topflight will be determined through playoffs.
It is worth noting that ex-Chelsea star Dennis Wise serves as an advisor to the board, and Cesc Fabregas shares the coaching role with Osian Roberts, as Fabregas does not yet have the necessary coaching badges to coach in Serie B.
