Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard had always believed that Ethan Ampadu would excel as a defensive midfielder, which could play a significant role in Leeds United’s promotion hopes.
Ampadu, a Welsh international, is reportedly close to a move to Elland Road, with Leeds being the only club to have made a firm offer of around £12m.
Lampard had worked with Ampadu during his time at Chelsea and identified his potential as a future talent.
Ampadu had successful loan spells at RB Leipzig and Sheffield United, with the latter’s manager, Chris Wilder, praising his performances and confirming Lampard’s prediction about his future career as a midfielder.
Whether Ampadu will be used in the back line or as a midfielder by Leeds United’s manager, Daniel Farke, remains to be seen, but his versatility will undoubtedly be an asset to the team’s Championship promotion campaign.
