Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong is preparing to take legal steps against the NYSC for extending Lagos corps member Ushie Uguamaye’s service year without clear reasons—www.naijnaira.com reports.
Effiong spoke on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, revealing plans to formally contact the NYSC Director-General before escalating the matter to the President, referencing Section 20 of the NYSC Act. The lawyer criticized the NYSC for failing to notify Raye officially about the service extension, suggesting this delay aims to silence dissent.
Effiong accused some parties of exploiting Raye’s case to suppress critical voices in Nigeria. “Why wait until she was about to finish before giving this reason? What offense did she commit?” he asked.
The controversy follows Raye’s public complaints in March about soaring living costs and economic hardship under the current administration.
NYSC stated on X that the extension relates to Raye’s absence at the April 2025 biometrics clearance, not her political views. However, Effiong insists she attended but was denied clearance by officials in Eti-Osa.
Prominent lawyer Femi Falana and ex-VP Atiku Abubakar condemned the NYSC’s move as “impunity” risking the suppression of free speech and constitutional rights.
