The federal government of Nigeria has recently announced the lifting of the ban on the importation of vehicles through land borders.
This decision is expected to have a positive impact on economic activities in the border region. Previously, the land borders between Nigeria and Benin Republic were closed, and the importation of vehicles through that route was prohibited.
However, following discussions between officials from Nigeria and Benin at an ECOWAS meeting, the reopening of the Seme border for vehicle imports has been approved.
This decision was driven by the complaints of freight forwarders operating at the border.
The Customs Area Controller of the Seme Border Command also acknowledged the negative impact of the vehicle importation ban on customs revenue.
With the ban lifted, it is anticipated that the Seme border will experience increased trade and economic activity in the coming months.
