Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina, has won his record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or for the best player in the world.

The award ceremony took place in Paris, France, where Messi beat Erling Haaland of Manchester City and Kylian Mbappe of Paris St Germain to claim the prestigious prize.

This victory marks Messi’s eighth Ballon d’Or win, making him the first MLS-based player to achieve this feat. Messi played a crucial role in leading Argentina to their first World Cup title in 36 years in Qatar last season.

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala also made history for Nigeria and Africa by finishing in the 8th and 20th positions, respectively, in the 2023 Men and Women’s Ballon d’Or rankings.

Oshoala’s 20th place ranking in the Women’s Ballon d’Or is a significant achievement for Africa, and she received congratulations from the Super Falcons’ official handle.

During his acceptance speech, Messi expressed his gratitude for his career and the opportunities he has had to play for the best team in the world.

He also mentioned the importance of winning the Copa America and the World Cup, stating that all of his Ballon d’Or awards hold special meaning for him.
