Liverpool Football Club is currently in advanced discussions with Jorg Schmadtke, a seasoned German executive, for the position of sporting director.
The 59-year-old is the leading candidate for the job, which will become vacant at the end of the season when Julian Ward steps down.
Schmadtke has held similar positions at Aachen, Hannover 96, FC Cologne, and Wolfsburg, and is well-known to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp, along with Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan and Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon, is involved in the recruitment process.
Schmadtke, who played as a goalkeeper for Fortuna Dusseldorf and Freiburg in the 1980s and 1990s, left Wolfsburg in February and expressed a desire to pursue other interests.
Klopp has expressed satisfaction with the current structure and believes that having a sporting director is essential for the decision-making process.
