Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk could potentially face a longer suspension following his red card against Newcastle.

Van Dijk was sent off in the 28th minute of the match for kicking through Alexander Isak to reach the ball.

While the initial ban for the red card would only be for one game, van Dijk’s actions after the dismissal, including hurling expletives at the referee and engaging in a fiery exchange with the fourth official, could be viewed as “improper conduct” and result in further punishment.

The final decision will depend on the referee’s report and the football authorities.

Opinions on the red card were divided, with former defender Jamie Carragher stating that it was unclear if it was a “goalscoring opportunity.”

Manager Jurgen Klopp disagreed with the decision and expressed his frustration.

Despite the red card, Liverpool rallied and secured a victory with a late brace from substitute Darwin Nunez.

The team has accumulated seven points from their first three games.
