In a historic moment, Ukraine successfully intercepted a Russian ballistic missile using a U.S.-made air-defense system.

The Kinzhal missile, one of Russia’s most advanced weapons, was launched from a MiG-31K aircraft towards the Kyiv region during an attack on Thursday night.

However, Ukrainian forces were able to take it down using the American Patriot defense systems, marking the first known time Ukraine has used the system.

The Kinzhal missile is difficult to intercept as it travels at 10 times the speed of sound and has a range of 2,000 kilometers.

The successful interception comes after Ukraine received the Patriot missiles last month, following its inability to intercept the Kinzhal missile with its available assets.

As many as 90 personnel are needed to operate and maintain each battery of the Patriot system, and Ukrainian soldiers have been trained on how to use the systems to lock onto a target on radar and fire at it.

The Ukrainian Defense Minister had requested the Patriot systems in August 2021, months before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February.

The successful intercept is a significant achievement for Ukraine as it signals its ability to defend against Russian aggression and potentially launch a counteroffensive to retake captured territory.
