Liverpool could soon be the target of a massive £5 billion takeover bid.
Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) is reportedly lining up a move to buy the club, making waves in the world of football finance.
According to TBR Football, this bid from QSI is just the latest in a string of investments from the Gulf nation in football.
For years now, Qatar has been increasingly involved in the sport, particularly in the Premier League, where they already have strong ties.
Liverpool, of course, has a history with the Middle East. Before Manchester City’s famous Sheikh Mansour takeover in 2008, there were rumors of Qatari interest in the club.
Currently, Manchester City and Newcastle United are the only Premier League teams fully owned by Gulf states, but Qatar’s influence stretches further than that.
FSG, the current owners of Liverpool, have links to Abu Dhabi through their partnership with RedBird Capital, which works with the UAE-financed IMI entity.
BeIN Sports, Qatar’s official broadcaster in the Middle East and North Africa, also plays a key role in financing the Premier League through their media deal.
Interestingly, even Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals, Everton, have held talks with Qatar Airways about naming their stadium after the airline.
Before FSG opted not to sell Liverpool in 2022, Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund was reportedly one of the interested parties, along with Saudi investors.
Qatar’s new bid could be a game-changer for the Premier League, bringing even more financial muscle into the mix.
