A man in his thirties who was a passenger on an Asiana Airlines flight from Vietnam to South Korea opened a door on the plane minutes before landing in Daegu.
He told police that he was feeling uncomfortable and wanted to get off the plane quickly.
He also mentioned that he was stressed after losing his job recently.
The incident caused panic onboard and nine passengers were sent to the hospital with breathing issues.
The man is currently detained and police plan to arrest him after investigations conclude.
While passengers have opened emergency exits without authorization while the plane is on the ground, this case of mid-air door opening is unprecedented.
A South Korean transport ministry official stated that it was possible to open emergency exits at or near ground level because the pressures inside and outside the cabin were similar.
