Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has not received any call from Nigeria’s coach Eric Chelle as the 2025 European U21 Championship approaches, according to reports.
Despite previous claims of a meeting between Chelle and the young talent, sources close to the situation have confirmed that no contact has been made.
Nwaneri, the youngest-ever Premier League debutant at age 15, remains eligible to represent both England and Nigeria internationally. While speculation surrounds his international future, Nigeria has yet to engage the player, his family, or his representatives.
The 18-year-old midfielder is currently in contention for a spot with England’s U21 squad, coached by Thomas Tuchel, who is reportedly monitoring Nwaneri’s progress closely. With the U21 European Championship just around the corner, Nigeria’s hesitation could impact their chances of securing the player’s commitment.
Nwaneri’s breakthrough season with Arsenal saw him involved in six goals across 25 Premier League appearances. Having represented England at the U17 European Championship and FIFA U17 World Cup, he is provisionally cap-tied to England, which means he would require a one-time switch to play for Nigeria.
Despite interest from Nigeria, Nwaneri has yet to rule out representing England, his country of birth, and currently appears to lean towards continuing with the Young Lions setup.
