The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued an alert to Nigerian security agencies regarding increased security measures for President-Elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President-Elect Kashim Shetima.

This alert was issued due to rising security threats and treasonable utterances from opposition camps.

MURIC’s director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, stated that the tension in the air is thick and that this is the first time open threats have been issued against a president-elect after being declared the winner of the presidential election.

Various individuals, such as an Abuja-based pastor, Sarah Amaku, and controversial Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, have made statements that undermine the legitimacy of the president-elect.

Additionally, Chuks Ibegbu, the former National Publicity Secretary of the Igbo apex socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has called for an interim government and an extension of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Some followers of a losing presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have also gathered in front of the Nigerian Army headquarters in Abuja, begging the military to take over power.

These actions and utterances have emboldened at least one real and palpable threat, as a member of the opposition, Obiajulu Uja, disrupted an Ibom flight from Abuja to Lagos.

MURIC calls on the security agencies to double their guards for the president-elect and vice president-elect and reminds those plotting to truncate the presidential inauguration of the dire consequences of their actions.

MURIC urges the opposition to exercise restraint in their conduct as they contest election results and reminds them that they have another chance in 2027.
