Ganiyu Obasa, the 32-year-old son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, has officially declared his candidacy for the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship ticket in the Agege Local Government Area. He made the announcement during a rally with APC ward executives on April 5, 2025.
According to Naija News, Ganiyu aims to continue his father’s developmental legacy by focusing on quality education, improved infrastructure, and responsive governance. He pledged to work hard to build a better Agege and meet the needs of the people.
Mudashiru Obasa has represented Agege Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2003. He served as Speaker from 2015 until his impeachment in January 2025, but the Assembly reinstated him in March 2025. Rumors suggest that Obasa plans to contest for the Lagos State governorship in 2027.
Meanwhile, political tensions within the Lagos State House of Assembly persist. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa continues to push forward with his legal battle against former Speaker Mojisola Meranda and other lawmakers, despite an intervention from President Bola Tinubu.
Sources close to the situation have expressed confusion about Obasa’s persistence in pursuing the case, especially since Meranda has already stepped aside in line with party resolutions.
“If you know Meranda very well, you will see that she is an easygoing person, not someone who wants the speakership ‘do or die.’ Since the leaders told her to step down in the interest of the party, she relinquished her ambition and did not pursue it further,” a source shared with SaharaReporters.
