The opposition coalition challenging President Bola Tinubu in 2027 is closing in on adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its official platform, NaijNaira can report.
The Punch confirmed that former Senate President David Mark is expected to act as interim national chairman once the coalition formalizes the move.
Those leading the alliance include Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, who reportedly reached a “near-consensus” on the choice of ADC during recent talks.
A source familiar with the process said, “We have all agreed on the ADC as the national coalition platform. So, ADC is our party, and that has been settled. Hopefully, we will make the official announcement this week.”
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) was initially on the table, but sources claim Tinubu loyalists have taken over much of its leadership structure, causing hesitation among coalition members.
El-Rufai had earlier pitched the SDP as a stronger option, citing its broader recognition. However, the majority reportedly leaned toward the ADC, which they believe offers a cleaner slate.
Another insider explained, “We adopted the ADC because time is no longer on our side, and INEC appears unwilling to register some of the parties we previously proposed.”
All coalition members are expected to abandon their current political platforms and converge under the ADC banner.
Atiku, El-Rufai, Babachir Lawal, Akin Ricketts, Salihu Lukman, and Abdullahi Musa Elayo remain key figures working behind the scenes to finalize the structure of the alliance.
