Ogundipe speaks on Connection Between First Lady and Lagos State House Dispute

Lagos lawmakers have addressed allegations implicating First Lady Remi Tinubu in the Assembly’s leadership turmoil. In a statement released Tuesday, the House refuted claims connecting President Bola Tinubu’s spouse to the ongoing discord within the Assembly.

Stephen Ogundipe, chairman of the Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, emphasized the House’s esteem for the First Lady.

On February 18, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly responded to accusations suggesting Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s involvement in the Assembly’s crisis. The First Lady has been purportedly associated with the turmoil.

In a communiqué signed by Stephen Ogundipe, the House disavowed any connections to the allegations. As reported by Vanguard, the Assembly asserted that its members are unlinked to the claims, labeling them as unfounded and spurious.

Ogundipe further contended that the report was entirely fictitious and lacked veracity. The statement partially reads: “All members of the Assembly hold the First Lady in the highest regard. As a distinguished former First Lady of Lagos State and now the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has made significant contributions to governance and national development. We firmly state that the First Lady has no role in any internal disagreements within the House. Any attempt to link her to these issues is entirely unfounded.”

On February 17, the Department of State Security (DSS) sealed the offices of Lagos Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk. The DSS indicated that its deployment to the Lagos Assembly was in response to an official request from lawmakers seeking enhanced security.

Intelligence reports cautioned about potential disruptions related to an alleged scheme to reinstate the ousted former speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

Amid allegations of an incursion, the DSS underscored that its presence aimed to maintain order and avert security threats at the legislative complex.

Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the DSS’s sealing of the Lagos Assembly.

Atiku criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to refrain from meddling in Lagos State Assembly affairs. The former vice president called for immediate scrutiny following the involvement of security operatives.
