Former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose has raised concerns about the growing exodus of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC), pointing to unresolved internal crises threatening the PDP’s survival.
According to The Punch, Fayose made these comments during his visit to President Bola Tinubu, where he openly praised Tinubu’s role in steering Nigeria’s economy away from deeper instability.
“For Nigerians, no one is saying it is easy, but there is no miracle,” Fayose said. “You cannot turn things around overnight. But for the little the President has done, we must commend him.”
Fayose, known for his outspoken stance, stressed that the PDP risks becoming irrelevant if its internal issues remain unresolved. He warned that the party could face collapse if urgent actions are not taken to address its challenges.
“If they don’t quickly take steps, the party will become a carcass. That is the truth,” Fayose warned.
He explained that the movement of PDP governors to the APC is linked to the growing frustration within the opposition party, as many of its key figures lose confidence in its ability to recover.
Despite his admiration for Tinubu’s leadership, Fayose made it clear that he has no plans to leave the PDP. “Ayo Fayose will not move from PDP to any political party, not even APC,” he affirmed.
Fayose also emphasized that his support for Tinubu is based on leadership qualities, not party affiliation. He said that even while serving as a PDP governor, he respected Tinubu’s leadership.
“Even while I was a sitting PDP governor, I believed in his leadership. The only thing we can do as leaders now is to encourage him,” Fayose stated.
He concluded by noting that his active political role has diminished, but he hopes current PDP leaders will take decisive steps to prevent the party from losing its relevance.
