Pope Francis Dies at 88, One Day After Easter Appearance

Pope Francis passed away early Monday morning at the age of 88. His death came just a day after he greeted crowds from the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica on Easter Sunday.

According to Channels Television, the Vatican confirmed his passing through an official statement shared by Cardinal Kevin Farrell. “This morning at 7:35 am (0535 GMT) the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father,” the statement read.

Francis had battled serious health issues in recent months. Twice this year, he faced life-threatening pneumonia and was hospitalized for 38 days before being discharged on March 23.

Still recovering, he surprised worshippers on Easter Sunday by appearing on the balcony. He waved to the crowds and delivered his “Urbi et Orbi” blessing, urging for “freedom of thought and tolerance.”

His sudden passing, following such a hopeful public moment, left many in shock. Despite frailty, Francis made every effort to connect with the faithful during what would be his final appearance.

The Pope led the Catholic Church for over a decade. His papacy was marked by efforts to focus on compassion, humility, and inclusion.

Cardinal Farrell added, “His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His church.”

The Vatican has yet to announce details regarding funeral arrangements or the next steps for electing a successor.
