The Holy See announced that Pope Francis, aged 86, will undergo urgent surgery on Wednesday afternoon to repair a hernia in his abdominal area.
The procedure will be performed under general anaesthetic and will require an incision in the abdominal cavity.
The pope’s medical team decided in the past few days that the operation was necessary due to recurring pain.
The Vatican statement also mentioned that Francis had already arrived at the hospital by midday.
This is not the first time the pope has undergone surgery, as he was operated on in 2021 for a bowel condition called diverticulitis, which required the removal of part of his colon and a 10-day hospital stay.
