Union SG striker Promise David has entered the UEFA Champions League history books by scoring the first goal of the 2025/26 league phase—www.naijnaira.com reports.
The 24-year-old Canadian forward converted a penalty just nine minutes into his team’s debut appearance against Dutch side PSV on Matchday 1.
According to UEFA.com, David is the first player from Canada to grab the opening goal of a Champions League campaign.
Speaking after the match, David said: “To score on this stage and be the first this season means everything to me and to my country.”
He now joins a short list of players who launched new seasons with the very first goal, a group that includes Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Jari Litmanen and Sergio Agüero.
Only Cristiano Ronaldo has managed to do it twice, once while wearing Real Madrid colors and once with Manchester United.
This marks the second campaign under UEFA’s new league phase format, which replaced the traditional group stage beginning last season.
Since the competition’s rebranding in 1992, early scorers from Daniel Amokachi in 1992/93 to Kenan Yıldız in 2024/25 have carved their names into Champions League history.
