Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has become the majority shareholder of Ligue 2 club Caen, as announced by his company Interconnected Ventures on Wednesday.
Mbappe, who recently joined Real Madrid, acquired 80% of Caen’s shares through Coalition Capital, the investment arm of Interconnected Ventures, taking over from the US investment fund Oaktree.
Although the official acquisition fee has not been disclosed, French media estimate it to be between 15-20 million euros ($16-21.6 million).
Ziad Hammoud, a close friend of Mbappe, will take over as the chairman of the club.
Hammoud has expressed his determination to create an environment where young talent can flourish and where the club can defend its identity with strength and ambition.
The French Captain now becomes one of the youngest owners of a professional football club.
His connection to Caen dates back to his youth when he was nearly signed by the club before joining Monaco and later Paris Saint-Germain.
The mayor of Caen, Aristide Olivier, took to social media to express his pride, stating, “You’d have to think that the time he spent at Caen in his youth left its mark on him! How proud we are to see a champion like @KMbappe investing in @SMCaen.”
SM Caen has a rich history in French football, although it has been playing in France’s second tier since 2019.
In the past, the club had its moments of glory, finishing fifth in the Ligue 1 in 1992 and reaching the league cup final in 2005.
With Mbappe as the new majority shareholder, there is renewed hope and excitement surrounding the club’s future.
