The House of Representatives has issued a warning to security agencies to remain vigilant in order to prevent any potential disruption of law and order following reports of a plot for an interim government.
The lower legislative chamber has also urged those who are dissatisfied with the election outcome to contest it through the court system rather than resorting to actions that could destabilize the country.
The resolution was passed during a plenary session on Tuesday after a motion of urgent public importance was introduced by Unyime Idem, a lawmaker representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal constituency of Akwa Ibom.
Last week, the secret police announced that it had uncovered a plot to establish an interim government and prevent Bola Tinubu from being inaugurated as president.
The intelligence report has sparked a debate and mixed reactions, with many Nigerians condemning the plot. Idem, who introduced the motion, stated that an interim government is unconstitutional and those advocating for it are “enemies” of the country.
He added that the judiciary is the only institution authorized by law to adjudicate post-election matters.
If the plot were to succeed, it would plunge the country into chaos, with future generations paying the price, he warned.
However, Sergius Ogun, a lawmaker from Edo, argued that the motion was a waste of legislative time and that security agencies should simply do their job and arrest and prosecute those behind the plot.
Nicolas Ossai from Delta state suggested that the heads of security agencies be invited to brief the house to enable it to make an informed decision.
The presiding officer, Idris Wase, emphasized that the DSS intelligence was not speculative and that it was important to ensure stability in the country.
The motion was unanimously adopted by a voice vote.
