Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has expressed his opinion that Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot be considered Nigeria’s legitimate president until the election petition tribunal has completed its work.
Onaiyekan stated that Tinubu is facing a serious issue of questionable legitimacy and that his views on Tinubu’s activities are reserved until the courts have declared the rightful president.
He emphasized the importance of the post-election petition tribunals as outlined in the Nigerian constitution and electoral law, which allow candidates to challenge election results through legal means.
Onaiyekan also commented on the recent removal of Godwin Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Abdulraheed Bawa as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, stating that it is normal for individuals in these positions to be changed after a certain period of time.
He expressed concerns about the security situation, economy, and fight against corruption, stating that there has been no significant progress in these areas in the past decade.
