As political discussions build ahead of the 2027 general elections, Anthony Sani, former Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has said the North remains hesitant to back Peter Obi for president, NaijNaira can report.
In a recent interview with Daily Post, Sani said Bola Tinubu has a stronger grip on Northern loyalty, especially due to his association with former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Buhari told his supporters he belonged to the APC and died in the APC,” Sani said. “His loyalists wouldn’t betray him, even in the grave.”
Sani dismissed any chances of a political upset from Atiku Abubakar or Obi. He argued zoning politics weakens Atiku’s chances and that Obi lacks trust from the North to commit to one term.
He recalled Goodluck Jonathan’s one-term promise, saying, “You would recall President Jonathan pledged to do one term but reneged.”
Sani said Tinubu benefits from being the only southerner eligible for one more term, which appeals to many in the North.
On the idea of a united opposition coalition, Sani stated, “Whether it’s Atiku/Obi or Atiku/Amaechi, the result will be the same.”
He believes the opposition lacks a distinct alternative plan, especially on critical issues like subsidy removal.
Sani added that while El-Rufai has intellectual capital, Rabiu Kwankwaso may hold more electoral power due to his influence in Kano and could potentially join the APC.
