The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has responded to a letter from Femi Falana (SAN) requesting the urgent recall of suspended Senator Abdul Ningi. In a letter written by his counsel, Umeh Kalu (SAN) of Seasons Law Firm, Akpabio disputed Falana’s claim that he alone was responsible for Ningi’s suspension.

In the letter, Akpabio stated that the decision to suspend Senator Abdul Ningi was made by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and not by him personally. He emphasized that he was merely fulfilling his role as a legislative house presiding officer, which includes pronouncing the majority decision of the legislative house at the end of debate and voting.

Akpabio also addressed Falana’s reference to legal authorities and court decisions on the unconstitutionality of suspending members of legislative houses. He requested that Falana provide the relevant particulars of these court decisions, as each court decision is based on its own unique facts, circumstances, and laws.

The letter further highlighted that legislative proceedings are guided by rules and that legislators are entitled to certain privileges for their actions during sessions. Akpabio urged Falana to consider the legal issues raised in the letter and proceed accordingly in any further actions related to the matter.

The response concluded with a request for Falana to accept their professional regards.
