The senator, Abdulaziz Yari, has been detained by the State Security Service (SSS) in Nigeria following his failed bid for the position of Senate President.
Sources suggest that President Bola Tinubu urged Yari to withdraw his ambition, fearing a repeat of the situation in 2015 when Bukola Saraki became Senate President, which was seen as a mistake that hindered Buhari’s first term in office.
“He was asked why he ignored the president’s phone calls during the Senate leadership battle,” an official said. “He started arguing that he has every right to contest for the position and decisions about his political career moves should not come from the president.”
“The president was trying to appeal to him to stand down his ambition to make sure any fate similar to how Bukola Saraki became Senate President in 2015 won’t be repeated,” the official said. “We all knew that Saraki’s emergence back then was the first error President Buhari made, and it crippled his first four years in office.”
Yari received a call from the director-general of the SSS, Yusuf Bichi, asking him to report to their headquarters for a discussion.
However, upon arrival, he was made to wait and was eventually informed that he would not be released.
His phones were confiscated, and it is expected that he may be held for days or even weeks.
Yari’s colleagues in the Senate have alleged irregularities in the voting process and may challenge the outcome in court, which could further strain his relationship with the president.
This detention comes after the recent detention of Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, both of whom were investigating corruption allegations against prominent politician Bola Tinubu.
Yari’s detention may continue if his colleagues in the National Assembly do not demand his release forcefully enough.
Yari’s push for the Senate Presidency went against the party’s endorsement of Godswill Akpabio for the position, causing tension within the party.
Yari has denied any wrongdoing and claims that his political rivals are trying to imprison him.
