The Society for the Eradication of Poverty and Accessible Rights (SERAP) has written to the Nigerian government, protesting against the recent increase in electricity tariffs.
SERAP objects to this unjustified action, particularly given the unreliable, inefficient and poor quality of electricity currently supplied to residents.
Rather than provide discounts to those in need, successive administrations have instead handed out trillions of naira as investments and bailouts to private electricity companies.
In light of this, SERAP is requesting that suitable measures be taken within 7 days following receipt/publication of their letter.
Should no response be forthcoming within this timeframe then SERAP will consider initiating legal action in order to compel the government into action – a move which it believes would serve public interest better than ‘the current approach’.
